THE IDLER WHEEL IS WISER: FIONA APPLE

>>-----> listen to fiona apple's new album, The Idler Wheel is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do, before it is officially released. to say that i'm excited to see what she has come up with after waiting nearly seven years since her last album, would be an understatement. always daring. i admire her boldness. i admire the commitment and her vulnerability in her art form. so enough with the talking. let's get to listening.

WE ARE STARDUST: JONI MITCHELL

to be a witness to the birth and rise of this star must have been something special. a folk angel with the sweet voice of a morning songbird. i remember growing up, my mother putting on joni early sunday mornings, when the mountain air was still cool and crisp. i would often attempt to emulate her sound and always failed miserably. i wish i could have seen her strumming her guitar, her golden hair shimmering in the sunlight, hundreds of thousands of people watching at woodstock. still beloved and beautiful. sweet joni mitchell.

THE OCEAN BREATHES SALTY: PLAYLIST SEVEN

//// stumbled upon this old photo of sailor jerry doing what he does best. i love this picture. from his horn rimmed glasses to the pipe dangling from his mouth. this man is legendary. of course sailor jerry is known for a very specific style of tattoo imagery, and it always leads back to the men at sea. that vision inspired this playlist. songs about the sea, the gambler. the deep dark blue. the calm and the storm. i long to watch the waves roll in as the light glistens off the surface like a million silver coins in the sun. for now i'll settle for songs about the salty air ////

A BEAUTIFUL CONTROVERSY: LANA DEL REY

 >>> photos: one//nicole nodland; three//sean & seng; four//nine//ten interview magazine; six//bella howard; thirteen//jane stockdale; fourteen//karim sadli <<<

lana del rey is no stranger to controversy. often critiqued for her polished and perfected persona, lana del rey is perceived by some as a recipe for a pop superstar. a recipe that was the vision of execs and questioned for its authenticity. rising to recognition largely by a cult following via videos and songs on the internet, this beauty has worked her way into being a house hold name. love her or hate her, it is pretty undeniable that she is a timeless beauty. the camera loves her. face it, lana del rey is a talented, sexy, and intriguingly mysterious woman. it's hard not to be lured in by her smokey vocals and pouty red lips. even for a skeptic such as myself.

BAND TO WATCH: ▼FATHER JOHN MISTY▼

 ///photos:two + three-maximilla lukacs via sub pop records//with bird by cody cloud//others collected via tumblr///

father john misty {aka j. tillman from the fleet foxes} just released his album fear fun in may of this year. a drummer for fleet foxes since 2008, tillman left the band in 2011 and is now exploring things on this musical journey, solo. singer, songwriter, guitarist, drummer...not only does he do all those things, he does them very well. his voice has a timelessness about it. it's comforting, like an old friend. something you feel you have known for a long time but yet manages to sound fresh. for more information, mp3 downloads, tour dates, and links to articles + videos, check out sub pop records >>> here <<<
